Description
GMB ST-1948 steering universal joint. Made in Japan. New old stock, never fitted. The box shows storage age. The part is new and unused.
One only.
This is a steering shaft joint, not a propshaft one. It lives in the steering column between the wheel and the rack, and it is a smaller, different animal to the driveline joints we also stock.
Staked and sealed for life. The box says STAKED, and that matters. The caps are peened into the yoke rather than held by circlips, and there is no grease nipple. You do not service it, you replace it. If your old joint has circlips and a grease point, this is not the same design.
The dimensions are how you match it. GMB list this by size rather than by vehicle:
-
19.06mm cap diameter
-
48mm across the assembly
Get a vernier on the old joint and compare. If the numbers match, the part fits, whatever badge is on the car.
Watch the L. GMB also make an ST-1948L, which is a different part. Make sure the number you need has no letter after it.

Fitment
The box names no vehicle. Match on the 19.06mm cap and 48mm size, or send us your rego and we will look it up.
Fitting
- Mark the shaft and the joint before you take it apart so the steering goes back straight.
- Staked joints need peening over properly on assembly. A half done stake will work loose.
- Do not try to grease it. There is nowhere for the grease to go.
- Steering is not the place to guess. If the fit is not exactly right, stop.
Best fitted by a qualified mechanic.
